Shastri gave the slogan Jai Jawan Jai Kisan to enthuse the soldiers to defend India and simultaneously cheering farmers to do their best to increase the production of food grains to reduce dependence on imports.

1928

In 1928 Shastri became an active and mature member of the Indian National Congress at the call of Mahatma Gandhi.

1964

The premiership of Lal Bahadur Shastri extended from 9 June 1964 to 11 January 1966. Formerly the Minister of External Affairs, Shastri became the Indian Prime Minister after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, on 27 May 1964.

1926

In 1926, he got the title 'Shastri' in Kashi Vidyapeeth University as a mark of scholarly success.

1966

He died a sitting Prime Minister in Tashkent, Uzbekistan under mysterious circumstances. Shastri was the First Indian to posthumously receive the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian award, in 1966, the year of his death.
