International Mother Language Day observed on 21st February
The International Mother Language Day is observed every year on February 21 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism in the world.

International Mother Language Day
Annually on the 21st of February, the global community observes International Mother Language Day. The purpose of this day is to promote diversity in languages, cultures, and multilingualism, while also encouraging their preservation. The celebrations aim to ensure the longevity of traditional knowledge and cultures by means that are sustainable, as well as to facilitate the cultivation of multilingualism within societies.
Theme of International Mother Language Day
The 2023 International Mother Language Day revolves around the theme of "Multilingual Education - A Necessity to Transform Education." This topic aligns with the proposals put forward during the Transforming Education Summit, which focused on the importance of indigenous people's education and languages.
Significance of International Mother Language Day
International Mother Language Day acknowledges that languages and multilingualism can contribute to inclusivity, as well as further the Sustainable Development Goals' commitment to not leaving anyone behind. UNESCO actively endorses and fosters multilingual education, with a focus on using the mother tongue or first language. This type of education commences with the language that the learner is most proficient in, gradually introducing other languages. This method allows learners whose mother tongue differs from the language of instruction to bridge the divide between their home language and the academic setting. It also enables them to discover the school environment using a familiar language, leading to better learning outcomes.
History of International Mother Language Day
In November 1999, the General Conference of UNESCO declared International Mother Language Day, with the idea originating from Bangladesh. In 2002, the UN General Assembly endorsed the proclamation of this day through a resolution. On May 16, 2007, the UN General Assembly issued a resolution (A/RES/61/266), urging member states to safeguard and preserve all languages spoken by people worldwide. The same resolution also designated 2008 as the International Year of Languages to promote international understanding and unity in diversity through multilingualism and multiculturalism. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization was tasked as the lead agency for the Year.

Tiger Reserves in India Significance
India has the distinction of being home to more than 70% of the world's tiger population, and the tiger is considered a symbol of strength and power in Indian culture. The Indian government has undertaken several initiatives for the conservation of tigers. The 'Project Tiger' was launched by the government in 1973 at the Jim Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand to protect the declining population of tigers.
Tiger Reserves in India Schemes
Project Tiger:
On April 1, 1973, the Indian government established Project Tiger to aid in the preservation of tigers in the country. It is a program that is completely funded by the federal government, which provides funds to the "tiger range states" to support in-situ tiger conservation efforts in selected tiger reserves. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) is responsible for overseeing Project Tiger.
Tiger Census:
Since 2006, the Tiger Census, which is a four-year-old initiative of the government of India, has been led by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) and the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) with support from various state forest agencies and conservation NGOs.
M-S TrIPES:
The Monitoring System for Tigers-Intensive Protection and Ecological Status (M-STrIPES) was implemented in all Indian Tiger Reserves in 2010. This software-based monitoring system aims to improve patrolling and enhance oversight of the Bengal Tiger, which is classified as critically endangered. The system is designed to support the conservation efforts of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) and state forest agencies, as well as to reduce human-tiger conflicts.
St. Petersburg Declaration on Tiger Conservation:
In 2010, the leaders of 13 nations that are home to tigers, including India, made a commitment to take all necessary steps to protect tigers worldwide and to double the population of tigers in the wild. This commitment was made during the Petersburg Tiger Summit, and the initiative's motto, TX2, was chosen.
