Polio Ravivar 2023: Celebrating National Vaccination Day in India
In India, National Vaccination Day is held on March 16 each year, also known as "Polio Ravivar," to raise awareness and promote vaccination against polio.

National Vaccination Day 2023
Every year on March 16, India observes National Vaccination Day, also known as "Polio Ravivar," to raise awareness and promote the vaccination against polio. This event is observed annually in several countries to encourage vaccination and enhance public understanding of its importance. While celebrated on different dates across the world, the primary objective of this day is to promote vaccination as a vital tool in protecting individuals against infectious diseases.
Significance of National Vaccination Day
Indian National Vaccination Day, or "Polio Ravivar," plays a crucial role in promoting vaccination and eradicating polio in India. The immunization campaign has been immensely successful over the years, culminating in India being declared polio-free in 2014. The effort involved the participation of government agencies, healthcare workers, volunteers, and the general public.
National Vaccination Day serves as a crucial reminder of the significance of vaccines and their critical role in preventing the transmission of infectious diseases. The day emphasizes the need for ongoing efforts to promote vaccination and ensure equitable access to life-saving vaccines for all individuals.
History of National Vaccination Day
March 16, 1995, marked the inaugural observation of National Vaccination Day in India, with a primary focus on promoting polio vaccination. This day is also known as “Polio Ravivar” in Hindi. During this time, India had one of the highest polio case rates globally, leading the government to undertake a massive immunization campaign aimed at eradicating the disease.
India's efforts to eradicate polio through its immunization campaign proved successful, leading to the country being declared polio-free in 2014. Nevertheless, National Vaccination Day continues to be observed annually in India as a reminder of the critical role of vaccination and to encourage individuals to stay up-to-date with recommended vaccinations.
National Vaccination Day may hold different meanings and histories in other countries. In the United States, for instance, the National Immunization Awareness Month is observed every August to underscore the significance of vaccines for people of all ages. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) established this month-long campaign in 1994 as a means of promoting vaccination and enhancing public health.
